What is a base qualification ?

A base qualification is considered as an overseas qualification that has equivalent in New Zealand. Whether that qualification took considerably more to complete offshore, is not relevant. What is a Residence Permit ?

Every time a person with a valid Residence Visa enters in New Zealand, they are given a Residence Permit. That permit entitles the holder to remain in New Zealand, for a indefinite period. That person will always be in New Zealand legally, and whether they are the holder of a valid passport or not. The Residence Permit expires when the person leaves New Zealand. That person will only be able to reenter New Zealand if they hold a valid RRV otherwise they won't.

How long time before i will moved to new Zealand after i have been approved for the permanent residence ?

There will be a point in time at which you will have been "approved in principle". From that day, you will have 6 months in which to complete any requirements that are imposed on you by that approval in principle, and a total of 12 months from that original date for everyone included in the application to have arrived once in New Zealand. That arrival initiates a Returning Resident's Visa (RRV), which is valid for 2 years. Therefore, it is conceivable that you could delay a final arrival in New Zealand for up to 3 years.

What is the difference between permanent residence and citizenship ?

Permanent residence is the resident who is residing in that country & they have a valid Residence permit, or valid returning Resident's Visa. The residence may lapse that right if that person does not have at of those permits/visas. Citizens applications are not handled by the immigration Department, applicants must be lived in New Zealand for at least 3 years before they can apply. Citizen does not lapse if that person is out of the country for any period of time. .

What happens if my RRV expires when I am not in the country ?

If you are the principal applicant in an Application for Residence, and your RRV expires and at that time you are out of the country, your residence will lapse. If you are a non-principal applicant, then your residence is reliant upon the principal applicant either having a valid RRV, or a valid Residence Permit. In that case, the non-principal applicant's RRV can be made current, to equate with the principal applicant's status. Such a person may, however, be required to complete fresh medical and police clearances.

What is IELTS ?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System, and this is the standard that the NZIS have decided will act as definitive proof to them of the English language ability of applicants who are residing under General Skills and Business Investor categories.

What is NZQA ?

The NZQA is an independent Government, not associated with the NZIS. One of its major role is to conduct independent evaluations of overseas qualifications.

What happens if I can't arrive in New Zealand within the correct timeframe ?

Any family members in the application who do not meet the requirement to arrive in New Zealand within 12 months of the approval in principle date, will have their Residence Visa will be lapse, and they will be unable to take up permanent residence. A new application would be lodged for that person, and they would need to meet policy as it stood on the date they applied. It is important to note that each person's requirement is only to enter for a short time, and they can leave once they have completed their RRV mmigration formalities.

For how long time my settlement funds have remain in New Zealand ?

Settlement funds for which points have been claimed under a General Skills or Business Investor Category application, must be transferred to New Zealand through the international banking system, prior to your final approval. Once final approval has been completed, you are free to use those funds.

If I met with an accident or require an emergency operation what costs will I have to pay for that ?

If you are a permanent residence, and you are admitted to a hospital for a treatment, you will need not to pay for that treatment. All New Zealand residents are eligible for "Accident Compensation". The benefits of the compensation varies depending on the treatment provider and the nature of the treatment required.

What benefits will I get when i become a permanent resident ?

As a permanent resident, persons entering New Zealand are entitled to all that New Zealand residents and citizens are entitled to, with the exception of:

  • Unemployment, welfare and student benefits for the first 2 years from their arrival date.
  •  To travel on a New Zealand passport, until they have met the requirements of the Citizenship Act.
  •  Some government agencies require all of the staff members should be citizens of New Zealand.

Other than the above, as a resident you will enjoy all other benefits and privileges that New Zealanders do. In particular, as a resident, education costs are as for New Zealand residents, rather than overseas students.

How do I open bank account in New Zealand ?

As a foreign national, open a bank account in New Zealand, and you can transfer funds in and out of the country, unimpeded by Government authorities. You will need to provide your passport, in order to open the account.
