Temporary Visa Options for Doctors

Temporary Business (Long Stay) visa (Subclass 457)

The Temporary Business (Long Stay) visa is the temporary visa pathway for doctors entering Australia. Employers are able to take advantage of the following streamlined processing arrangements:

  • employers and doctors are able to use a special online application form
  • employers can have one sponsorship agreement to cover multiple doctors, nurses and other staff employed by the same employer
  • Once a sponsorship agreement has been approved, employers can nominate doctors through a nomination application that is much simpler than a full sponsorship application.

 

Subclass 422 – Medical Practitioner (Temporary) Visa Closed

This visa allows foreign medical practitioners to work in Australia for a sponsoring employer for a period between 3 months and 4 years.
This visa is for:

  • overseas-trained doctors
  • overseas students who have completed their medical degree in Australia.

With this visa:

  • you can work in Australia for a period of between 3 months and 4 years
  • you can bring any eligible family members with you to Australia where they can work and study
  • after entering Australia, you and your eligible family members have no limit on the number of times you travel in and out of Australia.

 

Occupational Trainee visa

This visa allows people who

  •  to improve their occupational skills through training with an Australian organisation

People may be nominated for this visa if the proposed occupational training is one of the following:

  • training or practical experience in the workplace required for the person to obtain registration for employment in their occupation in Australia or in their home country
  • a structured workplace training program to enhance the person’s existing skills in an eligible occupation
  • The training must provide people with additional or enhanced skills in the nominated occupations, tertiary studies or fields of expertise.
  • structured workplace training to enhance the person’s skills and promote capacity building overseas.

 

This visa allows people to participate in approved occupational training in Australia.
This visa may be valid for up to two years .An additional two months may be added beyond the training end date to allow you and your family members to make arrangements to leave Australia or to apply for another visa.


Permanent Visa Options for Doctors

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 856) Closed

Doctors who have obtained full medical registration and have an employer who is willing to nominate them can apply for permanent entry under the Employer Nomination Scheme. The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) allows Australian employers to sponsor employees who are foreign nationals for a permanent visa to work in Australia.

 

This visa is for Australian employers who want to sponsor highly skilled workers for a permanent visa to work in their business. The employees can be either:

  • highly skilled workers from overseas
  • highly skilled temporary residents currently in Australia.

 

This visa allows you and any dependent family members included in your visa application to live as permanent residents in Australia.
Australian permanent residents can:

  • live and work in Australia on a permanent basis
  • study in Australia at school or university
  • receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
  • access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
  • be eligible for Australian citizenship (subject to the residency eligibility criteria)
  • sponsor people for permanent residence.

 

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 857) Closed

This visa is for

  • employers operating in regional and low population growth areas of Australia,
  • who want to sponsor skilled workers to fill skilled vacancies in their business.

The employees applying for a visa can be either of the following:

  • skilled workers from overseas
  • skilled temporary residents currently in Australia.

This visa allows you and any dependent family members included in your visa application to live as permanent residents in Australia.
Australian permanent residents can:

  • live and work in Australia on a permanent basis
  • study in Australia at school or university
  • receive subsidised healthcare
  • access certain social security payments
  • be eligible for Australian citizenship
  • sponsor people for permanent residence.

 

Labour Agreements

Labour Agreements are formal arrangements to recruit a number of overseas skilled workers. Both temporary and permanent visas can be granted under the agreement. Agreements are generally effective for two to three years.
Situations where an employer may consider accessing a Labour Agreement include:

  • occupations that are not on the list of approved occupations for the Temporary Business (Long Stay) Subclass 457 visa, permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS)
  • where a business recruits labour for the supply to an unrelated business and/or the hiring of labour to unrelated businesses
  • meat companies - Migration Regulations were amended on 15 October 2007 to exclude this group from the standard business sponsorship program.

With this program you can employ a number of overseas workers on temporary and/or permanent visas.

 

General Skilled Migration

Skilled – Regional Sponsored (Provisional) visa (subclass 487)

This visa is a three year provisional visa for :

  • overseas students and certain visa holders
  • the opportunity to apply for permanent residency after you have lived for two years,
  • a Specified Regional Area of Australia and worked at least 12 months
    This visa requires you to be either:
  • nominated by a participating State or Territory government agency
    or
  • sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area of Australia.

This visa uses a points test to select visa applicants with characteristics needed in the Australian labour market.
This visa is for you if you are in Australia and you are one of the following:

  • an overseas student or former overseas student
  • a holder of a Skilled – Graduate visa (subclass 485) or a Skilled – Recognised Graduate visa (subclass 476)
  • a holder of a Trade Skills Training visa (subclass 471)
  • a holder of a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417)
  • a holder of an Occupational Trainee visa (subclass 442) Closed

You must:

  • be under 50 years of age
  • have good English language skills
  • have the skills and qualifications that meet the Australian standard for an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL)
  • This visa:
  • allows you to remain in Australia for up to three years and requires you to live and work in a Specified Regional Area in Australia
  • allows accompanying secondary applicants to work and study, but only in a Specified Regional Area of Australia
